The story is simple. Two years ago we started focusing on persons with dementia who live alone—estimated to be over 1.2 million people just in the US—by conducting summits around the country and learning as much and as quickly as possible from the persons living alone. Building this online community and unique information resource focused on best lives living alone with dementia is a natural next step.
We learned solo aging with dementia it is not always a tragedy narrative, though there is plenty of risk, with an occasional crisis or difficulty. But just living in a single person household does not disconnect you from community, managing your own life, having friends, enjoying family, and participating in the economic and social life of the community. We have learned of the painful assumptions we make about the disability of persons with dementia, which can form a basis for taking away their rights to self-determination. And now COVID-19 hits us with another punch, increasing our isolation and our chance at community.
The intent of this Facebook™ group is to offer an online community by and for those with dementia who live alone, to provide emotional support, peer guidance and wisdom, and information from verified sources that the group members can rely on in their life planning.
Please invite others to join so we can live our best lives.
